Dr. Venkat Manoharrao Mayande born on July 5, 1950 at NIWALI village of Latur district in Maharahstra has completed his schooling in rural high school and obtained B. Sc. (Agri.) and B. Sc. (Agril. Engg.) degrees from Panjabrao Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola. He did his Master of Technology (Post Harvest, Process and Food Engg.) from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (U. P.) and Ph. D. in Farm Machinery and Power from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (W. B.). He started his career with the Bhartiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF), Urulikanchan (Pune) as Asstt. Agricultural Engineer where he managed the Agro-Engineering support services to Cattle Breeding and Agricultural Research Farm in addition to providing custom hiring service of farm implements to farmers. He, then joined International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) as Agricultural Engineer in Farming System Research Programme as a member of multidisciplinary team of International Scientists and participated in development of Vertisol Management Technology and Wheeled Tool Carriers for improving animal traction for management of field operations in vertisol. He guided international trainees from Africa, Latin America and Asia in development of research methodologies. After ten years with ICRISAT, he joined Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and was associated with Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA) for 19 years as Principal Scientist and Head, Division of Resource Management.
He significantly contributed in development of Dryland Technologies for Natural Resource Management and Mechanization. Later he joined as a Zonal Co-ordinator Krishi Vigyan Kendras for Maharashtra & Andhra Pradesh and contributed in improving functioning of 55 KVKs through administrative, financial and technological measures. He organised On Farm Trials, Front Line Demonstrations, trainings, extension activities and diversification of farming in more than 100 villages. He has promoted production of quality seeds, saplings and fishseeds in KVK, in addition to promoting organic apiculture and bio-inputs. Presently he is the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola since July 4, 2007.
As an academician Dr. Mayande has the distinction of supervising number of Ph. D., M. Tech., MCA, M. Sc. (Information Technology) and B. Tech. (Agril. & Mech. Engg.) students and published more than 115 research papers in journals of repute.
His research contribution in design, development and commercialisation of seventeen farm implements was recognized by ICAR by honouring him with prestigious ‘Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award’ during 1996, in addition to number of product invention awards by various organizations. He has two patents granted and six pending for his designs. He licensed his designs to 17 industries, which is acclaimed as the best model of public-private partnership. Apart from his research and academic activities he has been recognized as faculty on IPR, Agricultural Banking, Value Chain for Agri-Business Management and several other disciplines of Agriculture and Engineering
His mission mode approach in development of Quality Education, Improving Research outcome and Extension Technologies for enhancing livelihood of farmers in of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra made a beginning of new era in these fields.
