History

The Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Akola was established in the year 1970 under Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth. Consequent upon the establishment of Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur in the year 2000, this constituent institute has emerged as an independent Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, for the territorial jurisdiction of Western Vidarbha region.
Presently this institute imparts Post Graduate education (M.V.Sc.) in 10 disciplines and Ph.D. in 8 disciplines by course work. In addition to this, 20 schools of Dairy Diploma and Animal Husbandry are monitored under Lower Education Programme.

 

Location of the Institute

The Institute is located on NH-6 at a distance of 4 km. from bus stand and 5 km. from Railway Station.
 

Students Activities 
Sports and Extra Curricular Activities

Student’s of this Institute are involved in intercollegiate and interuniversity sports / games and also actively participating in youth festival and Ashwamegh etc. Similarly the institute is also organizing intercollegiate sports activities of MAFSU.
 

Extension activities
 The institute is engaged in extension education activities which involves the training of livestock owners in respect of Dairy, Poultry, Sheep and Goat keeping. This institute is actively participating in animal health camps, cattle show, infertility camps and relief during natural calamities, etc. as and when needed. Similarly the institute is also organizing livestock/dog shows, livestock exhibition and clinical camps on small scale.

 

The institute is also engaged in lab to land programme, Shivar pheri, farmers rally, poultry and dairy farmers meets and releases various publications for the benefit of livestock and poultry farmers.

The staff of the institute are regularly publishing popular articles/booklets/folders for livestock owners in various magazines and local news papers.  Addition to above the institute also organizes World Food Day, Kisan Din (Farmers Day), NSS camps, World Veterinary Day for creating social awareness amongst students and staff about social liabilities for agriculture and livestock farmers.

The institute is keeping liaison with other state departments like Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Agricultural University, Health Department, Municipal Corporation, Water supply Department, Social Department for collaborative type of work.
 

Training Courses Offered
During the year 2004-2005, the institute organized A.I. training programme for Livestock Development Officer and Livestock Supervisors sponsored by MLDB, Akola.
Institute also organizes dairy, poultry, sheep and goat farming training for livestock owners.
